Life size Donald Duck book for Naturalis
For a special collaboration between Naturalis and Donald Duck, we were asked to take a familiar format and make it considerably bigger. Not a Donald Duck for the coffee table, but a life size cardboard book designed to attract attention right in the heart of Naturalis.
The project was created around the special Naturalis edition of Donald Duck. During the summer holidays, this edition took centre stage in the museum and visitors could take part in Het bordjes mysterie, a museum quest connected to the story in the magazine. Almost 5,000 curious explorers joined in.
From comic book to eye catcher
How do you bring a comic story to life beyond the page? By literally making it bigger.
For Naturalis, we created a life size version of the Donald Duck book. The familiar comic pages were enlarged onto large cardboard panels, placing visitors right in front of the story.
The shape of an open book immediately makes clear what the campaign is about. At the same time, its impressive size ensures that the object remains a striking feature even within the grand surroundings of Naturalis.
Part of the mystery
The life size book was not just an eye catching feature. It also had a practical role within Het bordjes mysterie. The distribution and collection of the quest materials were integrated directly into the cardboard construction.
This made the book the natural starting point and finishing point of the museum quest. Visitors could begin their search here and return once they had completed it. In this way, visual impact and practical functionality came together in one cardboard object.
With recognisable comic artwork, information about the activity and an integrated area for the quest materials, the book became a central part of the Naturalis campaign.
A campaign to step into
A regular Donald Duck is something you flip through. This version became part of the entire museum activity.
The life size book did more than attract attention. It also helped visitors throughout the quest itself. This made it more than just a striking cardboard construction. It became a functional part of the overall visitor experience.
